Folklore from Makira, this is a sea spirit that has a few names but we know it as Rarakei Manu. It is also found on the Solomon Islands 5c coin. This image is from Waimapuru National Secondary School.

Much needed supplies of premium sundried Solomon Islands cacao beans arrived safely into Brisbane this week to ensure some of our Australian chocolate maker customers had some beans after a fruitful Xmas! Includes some lovely beans from Western Province, Guadalcanal and Makira. Packed in @grainproinc_ super grain bags as 25kg bags to suit Australian couriers 😉

This is how bags of cacao beans or copra (coconut) get from outer islands in the Solomons to the central island of Guadalcanal where the international port is located. In this case these are 80-90kg bags of copra. They have come from a village, down to the coast to be loaded onto a dinghy then onto a ship that will take the bags into Guadalcanal.

The main shipping port at Kira Kira on our island of Makira. Still no wharf. Unfortunately this time the dinghy capsized getting passengers to shore!
Some of our bags of cacao beans have to take this supply route from Makira. All our bags coming from Makira have inner GrainPro bags to protect the beans from rain and seawater. Although we're fortunate they've never been sunk!

2018 flashback - Spending time with one of the best cacao farmers in Solomons - Lenard from Togori Village in Makira. We love supporting him and his family with their small farm by sending his beans to an exclusive group of choc makers around the world.
