We are very sorry to advise that this beautiful leatherback turtle was captured and eventually eaten in Makira, Solomon Islands over the New Years Eve period. Henry Hio our Director in Makira took these photos and tried to get those responsible to release it, however they would not listen. These turtles are endangered and so these people have broken the law and should be punished. We had hoped to start a leatherback turtle conservation project in the area but unfortunately we do not currently have the resources to get started. Photos from the recent A1 games in Arosi, Makira, Solomon Islands. Brian's dad's village Tawatana came second and won the prize that was sponsored by Makira Gold. Makira Gold is proud to be a sponsor at this years A1 games at Hagaura village, Arosi, Makira. We love to support local sporting communities. If you look carefully you can see our poster 😊 Congratulations to our nephew Terrence Riitau for being elected the local member for Ward 7 in Makira Ulawa provincial election this week. A very hard working, reliable and honest young man who is well respected in the community and juggles his time between being chairman of Tawatana village and running sporting festivals in West Makira. One of the games that kids play in Arosi, West Makira. Beautifully sung by one of our Makira Gold cocoa leads Henry Jr 😊 Makira Gold is led by Directors Brian (On`e) and Henry (Kukamwame) from the Aoba tribe in Makira. The Threshold of the Pacific is an ethnological book from the 1920s that describes the cultural, social, magic and religious practices of Makira (it was called San Cristoval by Europeans early last century). The book describes in detail the ten tribes in the Arosi region of West Makira, including our Aoba tribe. Our tribe totem is the Kaopwa bird, which is is a blue egret with red legs.
